Climbing Wall

A friend from church asked if could help with an idea he had. Due to certain circumstances his 2 little girls needed a lift of spirits. So he thought, how cool would it be for his daughter (who is into climbing), to have her own climbing wall. Concept was quite simple; to fill the space between a chimney breast and the outside wall. The width of roughly each section was 1m, not much, but given that at its highest point; it is over 3m.

The main structure is quite simple, with a strong timber frame and overlaid with 18mm birch ply. The most difficult part of the project was working out the spacings for the climbing holds. As a climber too, I wanted to make sure that once the wall was installed, that it would be easy and simple to change the position on the holds. Spacing is critical as the closer the holes, the less structural integrity of the plywood. What added to that, was that some of the holds were 2 bolt fixing, or 1 bolt. After a lot of head scratching, and redrawing, I eventually came to a simple system. One that met the requirements of both types of holes.

What followed was a marathon of drilling holes and knocking in the threaded inserts.

Installation took a bit longer, even though the house is less than 100 years old, floor was not level, corners not square so I had to modify both the frame and panels to fit. The great part was that the majority of it went together super easy, just a couple of awkward sections, but in spite of this the most heart warming and most enjoyable was bolting the holds on and thinking how a 10yr old would climb. The best part though was receiving a picture of a very happy child at the top of the wall, superb.

Testimonial: We commissioned a mud kitchen for our sons 1st birthday and what Nic created was incredible. A beautiful bespoke hand crafted kitchen which our son fell in love with as soon as he saw it - Mrs C. WhitakerNick managed to take a basic and vague idea my daughter had about putting a climbing wall in her room and made it a stunning reality. Nicks attention to detail is superb and his communication throughout was excellent. He added extra touches like putting both child and adult grips onto the wall and used the highest quality materials in the build. The finish was excellent and I would love to use Nick again in future
