A Hand Built Corner Desk

This happened to be for a client's daughter who was getting ready for her exams due in a year, and wanted to give her the best environment for achieving her best. The Desk itself measures 1.5m width and length and stands about 80cm high. I needed this to be modular for several reasons; the standard size for birch ply or for any wood sheet size is 2.4m x 1.2m. So building the desk top in one piece was not possible. Also I needed to make this in the workshop and transport it to the clients for installation.

With 2 shelving units either side and a rear central pillar all interlocking and bolted together. This was so that the curved section would be unencumbered and allow plenty of access for chairs, feet, cats, and dogs! The budget was tight and even though birch ply was used, a cheaper variant was brought, but it did result in more time and labour in preparing the surfaces for painting. Even so, it did work out slightly more cost effective.

The longest and eventually the best results were in the matt lacquer on the ever so slightly pink hue to the white gloss paint. Can not begin to mention the number of times the desk top was sanded, painted, resanded, repainted, you get the idea, and so after many days you can see the smooth almost mirror like finish.

To add further opportunities for learning; the corner of the room was not square, and the floor was heavily sloping. I had known that I would need to incorporate adjustable feet, but after many hours of cutting and reshaping the desk top and playing with the adjustable feet the desk was ready for its new owner. To which I received a sweet text saying how much she loved it and was more than she imagined. Which is what I was aiming for. Job done.
