Outdoor Table
A custom built outdoor dining table for entertaining
I was asked by a client to build an outside dining table, nothing special there, but when we started discussing size and dimensions, it quickly became apparent that this was going to be larger than expected.
The original idea was to use Oak, but given the unknown nature with regards to shrinking, twisting and warping, I decided upon using Western Red Cedar. This is commonly used in structural applications, as the wood structure doesn’t tend to be effected like Oak does, and importantly is so much cheaper.
Due to the size of the table, it had to be built on site. Wood was supplied by Lillywhites, a local timber mill near Chichester. The design was roughly Farm House esque; oversized timbers, rough sawn with minimal fixing screws, opting for joints and glue. In total it took 5 long days to make the table and the 4 benches and once sanded with some water based protection it looks amazing.
I’m still in touch with the clients and even after 4 years, the table has seen many parties and dinners, has with stood the elements without a cover and feel vindicated for choice of timber as the table looks as good today as it did when I originally built it.
Testimonial: A terrace without the perfect outdoor dining table, isnt the perfect terrace. Nic conceived and built just what we needed. Seating up to 14 people, robust, functional but asthetically pleasing. Party-tastic! - Mr N. Smith
